The Gathering Storm grabbed my attention right from the opening chapters. What I enjoyed most was that this isn't another end-of-the-world survival story filled with action and stockpiles. The heart of the novel is the relationships between the characters and the difficult decisions they make as they prepare for a threat that most people refuse to see.
One scene that really stood out to me was Jonathan's coded phone call to his father, Wilson. The conversation sounds innocent on the surface, but the tension underneath it is unmistakable. That moment perfectly captures the atmosphere of the book: people trying to protect their loved one while knowing that something dangerous is approaching.
The hidden valley itself is another strength of the story. I enjoyed the practical details about organizing supplies, assigning homes, tracking inventories, introducing the working dogs, and building a functioning community rather than simply focusing on survival. Another favorite moment was the discovery of young Willis asleep in the puppy kennel with King and Sky Curled up beside him. It provided a touching and much-needed moment of warmth amid the growing uncertainty.
