This is a Standout Entry in the Sleeping Evil Series! Tense, intimate, and unforgettable. What I appreciated most is that West never loses sight of Jack's humanity. Even as the plot expands into treason, espionage, and political maneuvering, Jack remains a scared boy who misses Laurel Ben, who treasures a star chart, and who wants someone, anyone, to listen. His vulnerability is the emotional core of the book, and it's what make the thriller elements hit so hard. Jack Landburg is one of Karen L West's most compelling characters and his perspective transforms a national conspiracy into a deeply personal story of fear, courage, and moral awakening.

I haven't read the past books in the series, but the title drew me in, and West provides a helpful review of the past political issues and how impacts 13-year-old Jack. The story relates well to America's current political era, where a mix of conspiracies, corruption, sluggishness, and stagnation have produced precocity. at the same time, the story is a coming-of-age novel, with Jack having huge obligations. In a way, Jack is living Harriert M. Welsch's dream. Jack also has much in common with the protagonist in I am the Cheese. While West's short, thumping sentences and paragraphs are a bit too frequent, West gives Jack melancholy nuance. He still likes chocolate milk, and he misses his home "so much it hurts behind his ribs."
