What an interesting story. Brings back memories of COVID. Kept me wondering what was going to happen with enough twists that I wasn't sure. Great setting in a ghost town and love the dogs and obstacle course.
A new virus has spread worldwide, but it only affects children and young adults ages 20 and younger. Some recover, while others die on the fourth day of the illness. But even those who do recover are never the same again.
This is a dystopian novel in which a large group of people have created and built their own compound. It offers a unique perspective on what life might be like if the world as we know it were "ending." You naturally assume it would be absolute chaos, like zombie apocalypse. Instead, West creates a storyline centered around people working together to build something stable before the chaos ever begins. Overall, it was an interesting read.
This was a refreshing take on the post-apocalyptic genre. I especially like how the story centers on Kali, a K-9 SAR specialist whose bond with her dogs become even more meaningful after the virus changes the world. One of the most compelling parts of the story is when Noah begins sensing abandoned and hunted children beyond Ghost Town's defenses, forcing Kali and her team to make difficult choices about whether to risk their community to help others.
The combination of survival, found family, evolving abilities, and the unique Ghost Town setting kept me interested from the beginning to end. The K-9 element adds something different from most dystopian novels, and the focus on protecting the next generation gives the story real heart. If you enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction with action, suspense, and memorable characters, this is definitely worth picking up. Highly recommended.
