Jubrozan Dragon Riders by Karen L West immediately hooked me with the opening scene in which Rani awakens beneath a carved stone dome after dying in a VA hospital, only to find her loyal Belgian Malinois, Kula, waiting beside her. The emotional moment when she recognizes Kula's wet nose against her hand and realizes her aging body has been restored gave the story a powerful blend of wonder, grief, and hope. This book mattered to be because the relationship between Rani and Kula feels authentic and heartfelt, making the fantasy elements more meaningful, and readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy with strong human-animal bonds will find a lot to love here. 5 Stars!
What caught me right from Chapter 1 was the sheer emotional weight of the main character, Kristy/Rani, who bring her 75 years of real-world experience, trauma, and devastating grief to the table. The absolute shock she feels when realizing she has a flawlessly healed 25-yr body, while the ones she last back on Earth never got a second chance, is written with such profound beauty.
And I love how Kula, her real-life military working dog, was able to cross over into the magical world with her as her grounding anchor; it completely warmed my heart.
Lastly, I like that the dragons are not just dominating beasts, but that they have a spiritual, mental connection. Abellona was so much fun, being fiercely independent and refusing to follow standard military drills in order to chase clouds and snuggle on Rani's shoulder. A big 5-Stars!!

The loss of Max, Arthur, and Paul is never over-explained; it arrives in fragments - "The telegram car that pulled up outside my apartment in the rain" - and those fragments accumulate into genuine sorrow.
The military interiority - corners, exit lines, the instinct to map every room - gives Rani consistent internal voice that never wavers even as the world around her becomes fantastical. When Sephira tells her, "You understand loss" and Rani thinks that wasn't a qualification, it was a warning, the thematic core of the book clicks into place. This story has a strong start and end! Right from the first chapter, you get pulled in with the history of the character and all her memories. When she passes, she awakens to a newly refreshed body. I love the fact that her dog is always with her, even in her new journey. The dragons add a mythical bit to the adventure and action, and Rani is an amazing character that fulfilled the role perfectly!

WOW!! SOOOO GOOD!!!
Jubrozan Dragon Riders was truly a remarkable read. In some ways, it kind of reminded me a bit of one of my favorite sci fi films, Avatar. Rani dying, and not waking up in heaven, but rather, a strange new world in need of saving was mind blowing. And finding her beloved service dog allowed to cross over with her moved me to tears. This book was sooooo good. Truley a fantasy masterpiece.

I really went through, Jubrozan Dragon Riders, and I absolutely loved the story. The concept of Kristy London, a 75-year-old army veteran fading on Earth, being reborn as Rani on the alien world of Jubrozan is a masterclass in portal fantasy. It was so interesting I had to drop my cup of coffee and continue reading it.
What truly captured my heart was the emotional, grounded connection she has with her loyal K-9 partner, Kula, who is right there by her side, as well as her bond with her dragon, Abellona. Watching her step up to the role of Master Dragon Rider to rebuild the Kassin Cestyll and raise a new clutch of hatchlings against the creeping shadow blight was incredibly compelling.
Ms. West blended epic stakes with real, raw human resilience beautifully. As someone who respects the absolute grind of drafting and managing multi-book fantasy projects, I know that world-building on this scale presents unique hurdles.
